The 5-Second Rule for Competition Confidence

You know that moment right before you compete when doubt creeps in?

“What if I mess up?” “What if I’m not ready?” “What if I let everyone down?”

Here’s what I learned competing at the D1 level: you can’t wait for confidence to show up. You have to create it.

When doubt hits, you have 5 seconds to change the narrative. Here’s how:

Second 1-2: Notice the doubt. Don’t fight it, just name it: “I’m doubting myself.”

Second 3-4: Replace it with truth: “I’ve trained for this. I’m ready.”

Second 5: Take one action that proves it. Explosive movement. Power pose. Firm nod.

That’s it.

Why It Works

Your brain believes what your body does. When you move with confidence, your mind follows.

Standing still while spiraling? Your body confirms the doubt.

Moving with purpose? Your body overrides the fear.

Try This

Next practice, when you feel doubt creeping in, set a 5-second timer on your mindset. Notice, replace, act.

You’ll be shocked how fast your confidence shifts.

The moment doesn’t wait for you to feel ready. You make yourself ready in 5 seconds.

Win the moment.
